One point of differentiation for Thomas Weisel Partners as compared to larger banks is the level of interaction with senior management of industry-leading companies. At a bulge-bracket firm it would be rare for me to interact on a one-on-one basis with company management during the first year of employment, at Thomas Weisel Partners I’ve often had this opportunity and it is probably one of the greatest selling points for the firm. The exposure to decision makers in the industry and being able to understand what impacts their thought processes is probably the most valuable learning experience I’ve had on the job.

I find Thomas Weisel Partners to be a somewhat more relaxed atmosphere than other larger firms. This is not to say that the work is any less challenging, just that there is an advantage to being at a west coast-based bank, even in the New York office. Another major factor in my decision had to do with the close working relationship I have with my analyst. At a larger firm I would get less exposure to my firm’s senior management and the management of companies I cover. I am perpetually amazed by the level of responsibility I have been asked to take on in my first year and it really is something that I thrive on.
